Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig!

With the vernal equinox just a few days away, it seems like a good time for a new beginning (as in, go ahead and start blogging even if I don't have it set up just so yet). And as an Irish musician, the St. Patrick's Day season has always held a certain amount of sway over my general rhythm of life. Today, however, I woke up to the smiling eyes of my little pixie girl (happily crowing on the floor behind me at the moment - so thankful that she isn't crawling just yet). Over the last few years I have been shedding my skin as a professional (semi-professional?) musician and working to establish a home life. From playing pubs and festivals in far flung areas, to playing small local/community events, until last year, as an expectant mom, I did not perform for St. Pat's in any fashion (though I did celebrate it with my fiddle students).

This year, with my ever-changing babe to keep up with, I will be lucky to even get the fiddle out! (I'm sure many songs will be sung, however.) Still, it does seem quite odd to not be performing (though to be honest - the last few years I had been keenly feeling my "advancing age" as the college crowd that permeates pubs this time of year began to look younger and younger, and, frankly, more annoying). It is as if some inner alarm is set to go off in March, and I can't completely ignore it. So, hitting the snooze button for now (and if you knew me, you'd know I am the absolute queen of the snooze button!). As my pixie girl grows up, I am sure we will grow to celebrate March in a new and exciting way.

Today I am not even wearing any green (victim of post-baby body and available laundry). Maybe I will get some Irish fare together for dinner... One thing I do know, as I am about to head out and run errands, is that I will be engaging in the very American tradition of the spendin' of the green!
